On April 14, 1912 ...
. . . Titanic struck an iceberg and sank, sending more than 1,500
people aboard to their ice‐watery graves (approximately 70% of her passengers
and crew). Subsequent analysis of this disaster revealed many opportunities key
personnel could have taken to circumvent this tragedy. For family owned businesses, it’s a similar story.
Developed by Priscilla M. Cale and David C. Tate, consultants to family businesses, Sink or Swim: How Lessons from the Titanic Can Save Your Family Business is a
case presentation and book - adapted into custom 1 and 2 day workshops - that
demonstrate how lessons learned from Titanic apply to working with family
businesses - and others. In fact, disasters are all around - and one need just to read the world's news headlines to realize that no business is immune to failure. The analysis reveals five fatal flaws that led to Titanic’s
demise and the analogous vulnerabilities shared by many family
businesses. Readers and workshop clients will develop a greater understanding
of the factors that may increase or reduce the risk of business failure - and
action steps proven to prevent small crises from having a catastrophic impact.

Titanic remains an iconic symbol of preventable tragedy. While Titanic's story has remained of enormous public interest, the details surrounding Titanic are not widely known.
Our work involves sharing the story of Titanic to inspire leaders to do their part to minimize those risks that are both active and dormant. Sink
or Swim: How Lessons from the Titanic Can Save Your Family Business is
adaptable into comprehensive one and two day workshops appropriate for
organizations of various sizes, industries, and ownership structure.
Because
of the nature of the presentation and research, workshops are appropriate (and will be customized) for those
organizations that are not family-owned.

Cale & Tate's
comparison of family business and the sinking of the Titanic is right on in my
opinion. The success of a business is based on excellent planning, clear
vision, strong communication and flexibility. To achieve these goals, it
is imperative that family dynamics do not pull everyone 'off task' in a
business. This wonderful book helps to coach families on how to stay
focused on the right things to ensure the business's long term
success."

"A comprehensive, insightful review of best practices in managing and
governing a family business. The analysis of Titanic’s failures aligns well
with the authors’ focus on myriad critical family businesses do’s and don’ts.
Should be read by and pored over by all generations of family members who are
owners of a family business."
- Robert J. Lyons, Jr.; CEO, The Bilco Company
"Extremely
well thought-out, compelling. It was intellectually stimulating, and the
information was well researched and thought-out… Five stars!”
